I run an art gallery and we are about to install a yellow themed exhibit of 108 artists and the algorithm must have known, because this showed up in my feed. Delightful!
The show doesn't have an online store or gallery because we had a very high volume of work. I can send pictures somehow? I'm also planning to write a substack post about it soon.
When I rebranded my business in 2022, I chose a bright yellow & haven’t been able to get enough yellow ever since. This history makes me love yellow even more! 💛💛💛💛💛💛
I love everything about this post and this series!! I feel like the actual techniques and physical tools that go into making art are so little discussed or studied. It really puts you into the mind and heart of the artist to consider the materials they used and the risks they took to create their art. 💛
Fantastic and educational read. I actually visited the Rijksmuseum last week and saw these amazing yellows up close and personal. I want to return now and pay even closer attention to them.
Yellow is my absolute favorite color. I had to convince some fellow artists that Naples yellow is worth playing with recently. Absolutely love the brightness of cadmium too.
So fun! Thanks for all the work you put into this! I’ve done very little research into colors but I once worked in a historic house museum that used the wrong historical shade of green in one of their rooms and it always drove me nuts!
Was thinking about this… a little less than I expected actually. I think communism kinda did a number on this actually. So associations with royalty was not popular if a bit problematic.
Red is a big deal because it’s 100% the good luck color. You see it everywhere in Chinese culture. And conveniently syncs up with Mao (little red book and all).
White is the color of funerals and death. Traditional chinese funerals have mourners in white. If you’re at a traditional Chinese wedding the bride will likely not wear white. It’s bad luck.
I love this! Yellow isy favorite color, has been since childhood, and it gets a short shift often. Thank you for this glowing and in depth look at it.
Glowing is the right word - if there’s one thing I learned about it! What’s your favorite shade of it?
Yellow is my favorite color too and it’s so nice to see other yellow enthusiasts!

Ok Tim you must give me more details - does the exhibit have a site?? I’d love to check it out!

I’m so jealous! Each Vermeer is a little jewel-box. I could stare for hours.
these are my favorite posts to read 💛
Taking requests for the next color!
have you done purple?
Nope! Needs to be done💜
Please please do :)

Once you know the background context you start to think of the price of paint differently. P.S. I’d love to see your work!!
Here’s a work where I used Naples and cadmium! https://www.instagram.com/p/DHTUeIGMFqe/?igsh=amNoenRkZHZuODRh

The worst nightmare for color enthusiasts like us. What’s your fave color?!
I’m a shades of purple girl. My house - sounds weird I know- is shades of purple, green, and yellow. Eclectic and cozy. What’s your color?
In the Chinese court, yellow was the color that represented the emperor and was only worn by the highest officials or those closest to him (her?)
Similar to how purple was seen as an imperial color in Rome.
That’s incredible context - I bet there’s still trickle down significance in the culture now

GORGEOUS
Debated giving the history of “blonde” as a color - next time an addendum just for u
I remember sitting in my high school guidance counselor’s yellow kitchen and thinking 1. “ ok Mrs Bruce u go! “ 2. this feels so nice .
It has an effect on u no matter where or how you see it!
Yellow rules!!! And lives through your wonderful piece!! Thank you!!
Yellow fan club let’s goooo☀️
Who knew yellow was so fascinating? You knew, I suppose. Your voice makes this such an engaging read. Excited to keep learning w you 💛
300,000 years of history, we gotta find SOMETHING good!!
I'm just awed by the amount of research this took and how easily digestible you made hundreds of years of yellow obsession! LOVE your work!
Thank god I’m surrounded by people equally obsessed with niche colors history!!! Soul mate stuff
